10 Best Self-Care Ideas for Moms

All moms need self-care, including you, mama! I bet you are saying, “But when would I actually have time for that?”

As a mom, I continue to strive for self-care. It is difficult when my main focus in life is to be a good mom. However, I realized after years of snapping at my family and feeling upset and resentful, taking time for my own self-care is essential to becoming the best mom possible and ending those negative feelings.

What is Self-care?

  • Often moms put themselves last in the hierarchy of family life. Yet, it is essential moms take care of themselves too, with simple daily self-care ideas.
  • Many think being a mom, means your hopes and dreams have to vanish in order to be a “good mom” when in reality doing this will make you feel resentful. It is best to take care of you in all aspects of your well-being including spiritually, creatively, socially, physically, mentally, and nutritionally.
  • Not only does self-care mean creating a daily self-care routine to help ensure your basic needs get met, but it also means nourishing your world with emotional well-being.

Why are moms overwhelmed and in need of self-care?

When moms are put last on the “to-do” list, the “crabby” mommy comes out, and unfortunately, this side of mommy isn’t the nicest face we want to show to our children.

One time I was going on four days of no sleep, the house was a total disaster and I was really feeling like a mom-failure. I wasn’t getting enough rest and all aspects of my life were suffering. I was in tears as I stirred the mac and cheese and I was literally one bowl-spilling away from a huge melt-down. Yet, moms shouldn’t have to feel this way. Why did I let it get to this point? We deserve rest too. And to be taken care of, by ourselves or our partner.

Are you feeling overwhelmed, mama? Don’t let yourself hit rock bottom. It is time to start pulling yourself out of that rut and taking care of yourself. This post will list the ten best ways for moms to use self-care and stick to it so our days run more smoothly and we aren’t snapping at our family or having huge meltdowns in front of our kids.

You will be a better mom and have a better family experience as a whole when you start taking care of yourself!

So if you are ready to start using mom self-love and practicing self-care you have been dreaming about, read through these tips, and start putting them into action today. You can use different types of self-care to help you find what works for you.

Tip #1 Start Moving, Mama

Exercise will increase serotonin levels in the brain and make you a happier mama! Exercise is an essential level of self-care that should not be neglected.

So get out and get moving!

Some easy exercise ideas are as follows:

  • yoga
  • power waling
  • Youtube videos (quick, easy, free workouts)
  • jogging
  • Barr
  • higher a personal trainer
  • dance parties with your kids

#2 Tip: meditation for moms

Not a fan of meditation? This is still a struggle for me. But when I focus and meditate, it clears my head and I feel so much better.

Did you know you can start small? Set a timer for just five minutes and clear your head. Try to think of nothing and release all of your worries and anxieties.

If you are religious, use this time to pray.

#3 Tip: Be friendly, Mama

It’s time to find some mom friends. Finding emotional support is essential in taking care of yourself. Humans are social beings. In order to keep your emotional self well, talking to a friend should be a priority.

So make a coffee date with a friend and get in some “girl talk.” You will be amazed at how therapeutic this is and how amazing you will feel after your socialization.

If you are having a hard time finding friends that you can relate to, try joining a local mom’s group. I joined one in my city and my kids are now six and eight and we are still a part of it. We have made some really great friends and it is so nice to have something to do with other moms and be able to talk about different stages of motherhood.

#4 Tip: Eat right

One way to practice self-care as a mom is to eat well. You may find yourself eating kid’s snacks or going through a drive-through, which are all fine once in a while. But if you are making these foods your main source of nutrition, changing this up will boost your overall health and mood.

Try making a healthy meal plan and make a list before you shop. You will find having these healthy foods on-hand will help you eat better and get proper nutrition, which is extremely important if you are breastfeeding a little one.

You will also feel so much better, because as they say…You are what you eat. Think of food as your medicine and put the right things in your body, making sure to get all of your essential vitamins and minerals.

#5 Tip: Better sleep for moms

Getting a good night’s rest is essential for feeling good about yourself. You may be feeling down and crabby because you are not getting enough sleep.

Yet, I understand this is not always possible as a new mom (or if you are like me and your kid came into your room until he was five.)

However, if you are having a hard time sleeping and you do not have a newborn, you may want to try some better sleep strategies.

Here are some that help me:

  • journal worries before bedtime
  • melatonin (I like this brand)
  • comfortable pillow
  • spray bed with lavender
  • Turn off the t.v. at least an hour before bedtime
  • Put away your smartphone at least one hour before bedtime

Try the above to help you get a good night’s rest and if you are still having trouble sleeping, consult with your doctor to see if you need a sleep aid.

#6 Tip journaling for moms

Are you feeling anxious? Lack of sleep and too much caffeine will do that to a person. Yet, one way to combat this feeling of anxiety or overwhelm is to keep a journal.

According to the Positive Psychology, journal can help keep you boost your mood and release stress and anxiety.

You can use a notebook or buy a journal for these specific purposes, but set aside at least five minutes per day to write down your feelings. You will see writing down your worries or thoughts is like giving yourself a big hug.

#7 Tip spa day

If time allows, make an appointment at a local spa. Have your hubby or partner watch the kids and get a massage or get a mani/Pedi. You will feel refreshed and revived.

No time to spare? That is okay. You can set up a home spa. Sometimes just painting my nails makes me feel happy again. You can try your own mani-pedi or ask your hubby for a quick back rub.

#8 Tip Read

Find some self-care books to read. Reading is a calming, relaxing activity that can reduce stress and you can learn more about taking care of yourself.

You can also find books for pleasure such as novels or inspirational stories.

Reading books helps you focus on intellectual self-care. It is a wonderful way to relax and forget about the challenges of the world. You can divulge yourself in fiction or fantasy books or learn something new with a non-fiction book.

My favorite books are always self-improvement and self-help books. Here are some of my favorites:

  • You are a Badass
  • Atomic Habits
  • Marie Kondo
  • The Power of Habit
  • The Alchemist
  • The Energy Bus

#9 Get outside

Research shows being outside helps boost your mood. In fact, using your senses is an easy form of self-care, and being outside in nature can help you do that. Being outside helps boost your mood and lift your spirits.

Even if it is cold, bundle up and take a walk. Natural light increases serotonin levels in the brain and helps you feel happier.

So many times, I get busy and forget this simple self-care tip. Once I get outside, I feel my spirits immediately lifted.

#10 Hot shower or bath

Turn your bathroom into a day spa. Relax and take a few minutes for yourself. Even if you have a little one, you can put him/ her in a bouncy chair and take a quick shower while you watch them or wait until naptime. I used to do this with my son. I would put him right by the bathroom door in his bouncy chair so I could at least take a quick shower. I could still play peek-a-boo with him and get a shower so I could feel like a normal person.

Now my kids are older and I have more time for this type of self-care but don’t forget these little things when you have a baby. It can really save you from exhaustion.
